To convert your physical UK visa or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) into a digital eVisa, you need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account online.
This process is completely free and does not change your underlying immigration status or the expiration date of your current leave to remain.
What You Need Before Starting
Your physical document: Your current or recently expired BRP card, or your passport containing a valid visa vignette (sticker).
A smartphone: You will need a phone (iPhone or Android) capable of downloading the verification app.
Your personal info: A valid email address and a mobile phone number that you can access regularly for login codes.
Step-by-Step Conversion Process
1.Start the online application:
5-10 min.
Go to the official UK government portal at gov.uk/get-access-evisa. You will be asked a short series of questions about your identity document and visa type before being directed to click "Create an Account."
2.Enter your account details:
5 min.
Fill in your personal details. Ensure you type your name exactly as it appears on your passport or BRP. Enter your email and phone number to establish your secure login credentials.
3.Verify your identity via the app:
10 min.
You will be instructed to download the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app on your smartphone. Connect the app to your webpage using the on-screen link or connection code. Follow the in-app prompts to:
Scan the biometric chip in your passport or BRP.
Take a photo of the document details page.
Take a selfie scan of your face to verify your identity.
4.Link your account and submit:
5 min.
Return to your UKVI account web page. Check your details carefully, complete any remaining profile questions, read the legal declaration, and click Submit.
Important Note on Travel: Once your application is submitted, UKVI will email you when your eVisa is active (this can take from a few hours to a few days). Before travelling internationally, log into your account and make sure your current, valid passport is linked to your eVisa so border authorities can scan it automatically at the gate.
